If you have read John Ott’s book Light, Radiation & You, you know that certain brands of smoke detectors contain radioactive substances that can weaken the body. But you can still be protected with a non-ionizing (photoelectric) smoke detector. The BRK/First Alert photoelectric smoke detector contains no radioactive materials, making it safe for you to use. The AC-powered (hard-wire) model is for homes that have smoke detectors connected to the building wiring.
